Method for water analysis - test for pH
add 5cm3 of water and 2-3 drops of universal indicator into a test tube, check pH of water sample
Method for water analysis - mass of dissolved solids
measure mass of empty evaporating basin, add 10cm3 of water sample, place the water sample above a water bath, allow the water to evaporate, remove to cool, dry base of evaporating basin, remeasure mass of evaporating basin and dissolved liquids, subtract the mass of the evaporating basin to get the mass of dissolved solids
Why do you use a water bath in water analysis
to evaporate slowly and avoid an spitting out, making it safer and have a more accurate mass
Why is the evaporating basin base dried before reweighing
to remove any condensate from the bottom, this has a mass
