How to calculate formula using ionic charges (Ca²⁺ and Cl⁻)
cancel out the charges (Ca²⁺ = 2, Cl⁻ + Cl⁻ = -2 - formula = CaCl₂)
How to calculate formula using ionic model (Ca and Cl)
count the ions (Ca = 9, Cl = 18), put it into a ratio and simplify (9:18 - 1:2 = CaCl₂)
Model - dot and cross advantages
show how the electrons are involved in bonding, ion charges
Model - dot and cross disadvantages
don’t show the relative size of atoms or how the atoms are arranged
Model - displayed formula advantages
show atoms and how bonds are arranges, simplest model
Model - displayed formula disadvantages
don’t show how the electrons are involved
Model - ball and stick advantages
show the shape of the structure in 3D
Model - ball and stick disadvantages
don’t show the correct scale, misleading as it looks like there are gaps
Model - close packed advantages
show ion arrangement
Model - displayed formula disadvantages
don’t show all the ions
