Instrumental methods of analysis Flashcards
1
Q
Flame emission spectroscopy (FES)
A
sample of a metal solution is placed in a flame, any light that is emitted passes through a spectroscope, the spectroscope produces a line spectrum based on the wavelength of the emitted light
2
Q
Advantages of Flame emission spectroscopy (FES)
A
identify all ions present in a mixture without any colours masking them (can happen in flame test), intensity of the line spectrum is used to measure the concentration of the ions present in the mixture
3
Q
Why are instrumental methods better than chemical test
A
accurate, rapid (tests can be automated), sensitive (only small quantities are needed)
