Alloys as useful materials Flashcards
Alloy definition
mixture of a metal with another element
Why are pure metals malleable
ions are the same size, ions are arranged in regular layers, layers slide over each other so the can be bent/shaped easily
Why are alloys less malleable
mix of different sized ions form distorted layers that do not slide over each other
Are alloys or pure metals more malleable
pure = more malleable
Properties and uses of low carbon steel
more easily shaped, car bodies, knives, containers
Properties and uses of high carbon steel
strong, very brittle, structural steel
Properties and uses of stainless steel
hard, strong, resistant to corrosion, cutlery
Mixture and uses of bronze
copper + tin. statues, medals
Mixture and uses of brass
copper + zinc, water taps, door fittings
Mixture and uses of bronzaluminium alloys
aluminium + magnesium, aircraft, bike frames
Mixture and uses of gold alloys
gold + copper (red gold), gold + silver (yellow gold), jewellery (shiny)
What carat is 100% gold
24
How to work out the percentage of gold in 18 carat
18/24 x 100 = 75% gold
