Paper chromatography Flashcards
Why is paper chromatography used
to separate and identify different colours in a mixture
Method to paper chromatography
draw a start line in pencil, space out 4 sample spots, add known coloured dye to 3 of the spots, add spot of unknown dye, place beaker and add distilled water below the line, allow water to move up the paper
How does paper chromatography work
the solvent carries the colourings up the chromatography paper
The more soluble the colouring is
the higher up the colouring is deposited on the chromatography paper
Retention factor (Rf) equation
distance moved by the substance/distance moved by the solvent
Mobile phase (paper chromatography)
solvent
Stationary phase (paper chromatography)
