Water Flashcards
Anion
a negative ion
Cation
a positive ion
Ionic bonds
bonds formed when atoms give or receive electrons; they result in charged particles called ions
Covalent bonds
bonds formed when atoms share electrons; covalent molecules may be polar if the electrons are not shared evenly
dipole
the separation of charge in a molecule when the electrons in a covalent bond are not evenly shared
polarised
when electrons in a covalent bond are not quite evenly shared
Polar molecule
a molecule containing a dipole
Dissociation
splitting of a molecule into smaller molecules, atoms or ions, especially by a reversible process
Hydrogen bonds
weak electrostatic intermolecular bonds formed between polar molecules containing at least one hydrogen atom
Polar solvent
is a solvent that has large dipole moments. The molecules in the solvent are polar because of the different electronegativity values. A polar solvent can dissolve ions and other polar compounds
Cohesion
the act, state, or process of sticking together of alike molecules or entities. (the attraction of molecules of other molecules of the same kind)
Adhesion
the attraction of molecules of one kind to molecules of a different kind
