oxidative phosphorylation Flashcards
Oxidative phosphorylation
the oxygen-dependent process in the electron transport chain where ADP is phosphorylated
electron transport chain
a series of electron-carrying compounds along which electrons are transferred in a series of oxidation/reduction reactions, driving the production of ATP
chemiosmosis
the process that links the electrons that are passed along the electron transport chain to the production of ATO, by the movement of hydrogen ions through the membrane along electrochemical concentration and pH gradients
cytochromes
members of the electron transport chain; they are protein pigments with an iron group (similar to haemoglobin) which are reduced by electrons from reduced FAD, which is reoxidised, with the production of a molecule of ATP
cytochrome oxidase
an enzyme in the electron transport chain which receives the electrons from the cytochromes and is reduced as the cytochromes are oxidised, with the production of a molecule of ATP
chemiosmotic theory
the model developed by Peter Mitchell to explain the production of ATP in mitochondria, chloroplasts and elsewhere in living cells
respiratory substrate
the substance used as fuel and oxidised during cellular respiration
respiratory quotient (RQ)
the relationship between the amount of carbon dioxide produced and the amount of oxygen used when different respiratory substrates are used in cellular respiration
