Wake turbulence Flashcards
What is wake turbulence?
Wake turbulence is the effect of the rotating air masses generated behind the wing tips of aircraft.
What is wake vortex?
The shape and nature of the air mass created by wake turbulence.
What are the 3 wake turbulence categories?
- Heavy (H)
- Medium (M)
- Light (L)
What is the range of mass for the heavy wake turbulence category?
> 136,000kg
What is the range of mass for the medium wake turbulence category?
7,000-136,000kg
What is the range of mass for the light wake turbulence category?
<7,000Kg
What are the two types of separation?
- Time based
- Distance based
What’s the time based separation for a medium behind a heavy?
2 minutes
What’s the time based separation for a light behind a medium or a heavy?
3 minutes
How far apart must two runways be to not effect each others seperation?
760m
What is the distance separation for a heavy behind a heavy?
4nm
What is the distance separation for a medium behind a heavy?
5nm
What is the distance separation for a light behind a heavy?
6nm
What is the distance separation for a light behind a medium?
5nm
List 2 times ATC does not have to apply separation minima?
- Arriving VFR.
- Arriving IFR flights executing a visual approach when told to maintain own separation (ATC must issue caution of possible wake turbulence.)
