Aircraft 2 (Effects of controls and flight envelope) Flashcards
What are trim tabs?
Trim tabs are a secondary flight control surface. Elevators can be split into individually controlled sections to improve aerodynamics.
What are flaps and slats?
Moving parts of the wing. Used during take off and landing to increase surface area of the wings increasing lift and drag.
What are the 3 flight controls of a helicopter?
- Anti-Torque pedals
- Cyclic
- Collective
What does the cyclic do?
Changes the pitch of the rotor blades (tilt).
What is a collective?
Looks like a hand break, controls climb and decent.
What are anti-torque pedals?
Pedals that control the pitch of tail rotor blades.
What are the 7 a/c flight controls?
- Rudder
- Ailerons
- Elevator
- Throttle
- Flaps
- Trim tabs
- Rotary wing controls
What is the flight envelope?
The flight envelope refers to the capabilities of the a/c.
What are the 5 limiting factors of the flight envelope?
- Max speed
- Stall speed
- Ceiling
- Airflow (Streamline)
- Angle of attack
What is rate of climb?
The rate of climb is the increase in vertical position.
What is Vx?
The speed for the best angle of climb.
What is Vy?
The speed for the best rate of climb.
What is the max RoC in the UK?
8000ft/min
What is stall speed?
The minimum speed at which an a/c can maintain level flight.
What is an a/c ceiling?
The point where no additional speed results is an increase in altitude. This is caused by lift getting smaller at high altitudes until it no longer exceeds gravity.
