Aircraft 5 (Factors affecting a/c performance) Flashcards

1
Q

What is runway slops?

A

When a runway have an up slope. This will increase the weight of the a/c increasing the take-off run.

Q

How does runway length affect a/c take off?

A

Longer runways allow the a/c a greater time and distance to reach critical speeds used in take off calculations. It can also off set some of the limiting effects that temperature and air density have on take off performance.

Q

How does wind affect take off?

A

Take off into a headwind allows the a/c to reach take-off velocity at a lower ground speed.

Q

How does air density affect take off?

A

Higher take off velocity is required in low density when less thrust in available.

Q

How does weight affect take off?

A

Required take-off velocity is increased and there’s more rolling friction.

6
Q

How does altitude affect the climb?

A

An increase in altitude will increase the power required and decrease the power available due to lower air density.

Q

How does cabin pressure affect the climb?

A

Typically un-pressurised a/c will climb at a slower rate.

Q

How does temperature affect the climb?

A

Warm air can hold more moisture meaning less dense air resulting in poorer RoC.

Q

What is hyrdo planning?

A

What a layer of water on the runway separates the tyre from the surface meaning breaking and directional control is almost nil.

Q

When can fuel be jettisoned?

A
  • Over the sea if possible or above 10,000ft.
  • If not possible 7000ft AGL in winter and 4000ft AGL in summer.
  • Can be done anywhere in an emergency
