W7 : Adrenocorticosteroid Drugs Flashcards
What is the potential complication of long-term use of glucocorticoids?
osteoporosis due to inhibition of bone formation, suppression of calcium absorption
What are the main activities of glucocorticoids?
Promote catabolism of proteins and gluconeogenesis.
[inhibit inflammatory and immunologic responses]
Inhibit the synthesis of two main products of inflammation, prostaglandin and leukotriens.
Decrease and inhibit peripheral lymphocytes and macrophages.
infections).
What is the main activity of mineralocorticoids?
salt and water balance (retention of sodium and excretion of potassium)
What are the uses of glucocorticoids?
For replacement therapy in Adrenocortical insufficiency states, such as Addisons disease.
Treatment of inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Treatment of allergic conditions such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, etc.
What are Glucocorticoid drugs?
Hydrocortisone (solu-cortef)- Preferred drug for replacement therapy
Prednisone
What are the uses of mineralocorticoids?
For replacement theraphy in aldosterone insufficiency states, such as Addison disease.
Used in treatment of orthostatic hypotension.
What is Fludrocortisone(Florinef)?
Adrenocorticosteroid mineralocorticoid drug for potent minderalocorticoid activity
What is Ketoconazole (Nizoral)?
Drug that is used for treatment of states of excessive adrenocortical hormones. It has antifungal agent that strongly inhibits all gonadal and adrenal steroid hormone synthesis; also used in the treatment of Cushing’s syndrome.
What is Spiranolactone (Aldactone)?
Drug that is used for the treatment of states of excessive adrenocortical hormones; Antihypertensive drug that competes for the aldosterone receptor and, thus inhibits sodium reabsorption in the kidneys; also antagonizes aldosterone and testosterone synthesis; effective against hyperaldosteronism, and hirsutism in women (interfere androgen receptor of the hair follicle)
