What are the 4 ligaments of the TMJ?
Medial and lateral collateral ligaments
Tempromandibular ligament: Prevents lateral and posterior displacement of the condyle
Stylomandibular ligament: Helps limit anterior protrusion of the mandible
Spenomadibular ligament: May help act as a pivot on the mandible by maintaining the same amount of tension during both opening and closing of the mouth
Describe the temporalis location, origination, insertion, innvervation and function
Located on the lateral surface of the skull.
Originates entire temporal fossa along the inferior temporal line including the temporal facia.
Inserts at coronoid process.
Innervation is created by the mandibular division of the trigmeminal nerve.
Function is to elevate mandible, retrude mandible and lateral excursion of the mandible.
Describe the massetter location, origination, insertion, innvervation and function
Located on the lateral surface of the mandible.
Includes a superficial head and deep head.
Superficial head originates on the inferior border of the anterior 2/3 of the zygomatic arch.
Inserts at the angle of the mandible and lateral parts of ramus.
Deep head originates on the medial border of the zygomatic arch, inferior border of the posterior 1/3 of zygomatic arch.
Inserts are superolateral mandibular ramus (coronoid process).
Innervation by massenteric branch from the mandibular division of he trigeminal nerve.
Acts to elevate and protrude mandible also aids in lateral excrusion of the mandible.

Located medial to the mandible.
Consists of a superficial head and deep head.
The superficial head originates in the maxillary tuberosity, pyramind process of palantine.
The deep head originates in the medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate.
Inserts at the medial surface of the ramus & angle of the mandible.
Innervation derives from medial ptergoid branch from the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve.
Elevates, protrudes and lateral excrusion of mandible.
Descibe the lateral pterygoid location, origination, insertion, innvervation and function
Located medial to the mandible.
Consists of a superior head and inferior head.
The superior head originates on the greater wing of the spenoid bone, infratemporal crest.
Insertion at articulator disco and capsule of TMJ.
The inferior head originates on the lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate.
Insertion at pterygoid fovea on the neck of the condyle on mandible.
Innervation at lateral pterygoid branches for each head from the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve.
Acts to depress, protrude and lateral excursion of the mandible.
What 3 muscles does the trigeminal nerve (anterior division of mandibular branch) innervate?
Temporalis, Masseter, Lateral Pterygoid
What muscle does the trigeminal nerve (main trunk of mandibular branch) innervate?
Medial pterygoid
