W4 L1 Microbiology Flashcards
Define microbiology
the study of microbes
List 3 roles of microbes
Decomposition of deal organisms and their waste products
Antibiotic production
Food production
What are the two main categories of microbes?
Acellular
Cellular
What is a pathogen?
Disease causing microorganisms (infectious agents)
What is a non-pathogen?
Microbes that do not cause disease
Define acelluar
Microbes that need to invade other cells to replicate or perform physiological functions
What is an example of acellur?
Virusus (viroids, prions)
Define opportunistic microbes
Can cause disease if they colonize in areas of the body that are vulnerable
What is a viroid?
Infectious particles, interfere with the function of plant cells
What is a prion?
Infectious particles that cause neurological conditions in humans and animals
Describe the structure of viruses
Made up of either DNA or RNA.
A protein coat called a capsid made of proteins called capsomeres.
List the properties that distinguish viruses from living cells
Viruses cannot replicate on their own, they need a host cell.
- Viruses cannot produce their own energy
They cannot produce their own proteins
List the characteristics that viruses are classified by
DNA or RNA
The shape of the caspid
Presence or absence of an envelope
What is bacteriophages?
Viruses that infect bacteria
What is an animal virus?
Viruses that infect animals
