W3 Acids,bases and pH Flashcards
What is acid?
Acid is a substance(compound) that separates when dissolved in water and releases hydrogen ions (H+)
What is an acid base?
Is a substance that separates when dissolved in water and releases hydroxide ions (OH-)
What is a weak acid?
BMS191 pp
Substance that has a weak tendency to dissociate completely to release OH-
What is pH?
Potential hydrogen. The measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) solution
What are buffers?
Is a substance that is able to remove or add H+, able to resist changes in pH
Why is the correct pH important for the body?
To maintain homeostasis. Outside 7.35-7.45 the body is severely compromised. Acidosis/Alkalosis
What is a salt?
Substances separates when dissolved in water and releases an cation and an anion.
What is a weak acid base?
A Substances that has a weak tendency to dissociate to release OH-, may also reform
What scale pH does the body like to maintain?
7.35-7.5, any lower causes Acidosis
