Vocab Flashcards
Homolog
A homologous trait has the same developmental origin, not
necessarily the same final appearance or function
Analog
Characteristics that serve the same function
Homeoplasty
Characteristics that share similar appearance
Monophyletic
A group which includes all its
derived groups
Polyphyletic
ontains members of multiple
groups but not their common
ancestor(s).
Paraphyletic
A group that does not include all
derived groups
Adaptation
volutionary changes to a group over generations
Acclimation
hanges to an individual over its lifetime in response to environmental
factors
Pre-adaptation
Adaptations which provide the phenotypic variation necessary for the
later evolution of a trait. This is not anticipatory.
Function
The function of a trait is what it does
Role
How the function of a trait allows an organism to exploit its
environment
Ontogeny
he developmental history of an organism
Phylogeny
The evolutionary history of a species or group
Closer to the common ancestral state
Basal, Primitive, Degenerate, Vestigial, Rudimentary
Less similar to the common ancestral state
erived, Modified, Advanced, Specialized
