Thermal Regulations Flashcards
what are the 3 types of thermogenesis
- shivering
- non shivering thermogenesis
- growing of white adipose tissue
explain how shivering works
it is controlled by your subconscious by sending. signal to you nerves to make your muscles move viciously to produce heat however it isn’t used for long
explain how non shivering thermogenesis works
it makes you SERCA leaky so ATP production os inefficient so you do it more to produce heat
explain browning of white adipose tissue to beige
it makes the fat droplets smaller so it can fit more mitochondria to activate proton leaking which then makes the mitchondria work more
what animals dont have brown adipose tissue
monotremes and birds
what are the 4 theories to why animals have endothermy
- parental care
- byproduct of energy
- byproduct of size
- had the pre adaption of the thymus
- allowed for travel to different climates
explain parental care endothermy hypothesis
it was developed to warm eggs
cons
- some endotherms don’t warm their eggs
- wouldn’t they be hetroderm only turning it on for kids
- wouldn’t be more present in females
explain by product of energy
some slow animals like sloth are still endotherms
by product of size
the energy we had when we were big is being used to keep use warm now hat we are small
con: not all endoderms have big ancestors
the pre adaption in cehpochorates
yes they had an endosyle that is the precursor to the thymus but it doesn’t say why we have it
allowed for travel to different climates
con: not all animals mitigated but they still have endothermy
why do we think dinosaurs were endoterms?
- they were metabolically actuve
- had lungs like birds
- fast growth rate = fast metabolism
