Nonvertebrate Chordates Flashcards
what are the 5 defining ancestral traits of chordates?
- Notochord
- Dorsal Neural Tube
- Pharyngeal slits
- Endostyle
- Post-anal tail
What is a notochord?
its a flexible rod in a fluid in tough sheath that moves laterally for the creature to move
How do celephochordates move?
using the muscles called myomeres and cartilage
what is the dorsal neural tube?
it gives rise to the CNS and is form in embryo
How did cephelochrodates feed?
suspension feeders so they sucked in food and water by a water current
how does food move through celephochordates body?
Food gets into the pharynx getting trapped by the mucus, gets secreted by the endostyle, moves into gut then out the anus
how does water move through the body
enters the pharynx as well, passes through the pharyngeal slits, into the atrium and out throw the atriopore
What are the pharyngeal slits
the openings in the pharynx that allows one way flow of water, they are the ancestral trait of gill slits
what is the endostyle
homologous to the thyroid, used for iodine metabolism
how is the cephalochpordata circulatory and respiratory systems
- closed circulatory system, no heart, plasma like blood moves by peristalsis
- respiration is done through the surface?
Where is the post anal tail
it extends past the anus
what are urochordates?
they have all the chordate features just with a different body plan
