What is a VLAN?
A
Virtual Local Area Network. A logical subnetwork that groups a collection of devices from different physical LANs. VLANs improve network security and performance by isolating and grouping different types of traffic.

A
Virtual Private Network. VPNs form an encrypted tunnel so that information can travel securely across a public network.

What is a VPN concentrator?
A
an encryption/decryption access device which is often integrated into a firewall. Its a type of router device that can handle multiple VPN tunnels.

What are the deployment options for VPN?
A
specialized cryptographic hardware or a software based option.

What is the rough outline of how VPNs work?
A
- Via your laptop you turn the VPN on.
- data travels down the encrypted tunnel to the VPN concentrator
- the concentrator receives the data, it decrypts the data and sends the info to the corporate network.
