IPv4 and IPv6 Flashcards
What is IPv4?
The primary protocol for everything we do. Contains 4 sets of numbers divided with a period.
What is IPv6?
A protocol which was invented as we were running out of IPv4 addresses. The first 64 bits are a network address and the last 64 bits is a host address.
How many bits is an IPv4 address?
32 bits (4bytes). Each segment is made up of 8 bits, 1 byte or 1 octet.
What is the maximum decimal value for each byte?
255
How many bits are in a IPv6 address?
128 bits
What is a default gateway?
a node in a computer network using the IP suite that serves as the forwarding host to other networks when no other route specification matches the destination IP address of the packet. (such as a router)
