What are the advantages of an LCD?
They are lightweight, low power and inexpensive
What are the disadvantages of an LCD?
Black levels are a challenge, requires a separate backlight which is difficult to replace if it fails.
What are the three different technologies of LCD?
TN (Twisted Neumatic), IPS (In Plane Switching) VA (Vertical Alignment)
What are the differences between the three LCD technologies?
TN = has a fast response time but bad viewing angles.
IPS = great colour representation but is most expensinve.
VA = a good compromise between both with good colour representaion but slower than TN.
What is OLED?
Organic Light Emitting Diode. An organic compound which emits light when receiving an electeric current. Often seen in newer devices like tablets and mobile phones.
What is CCFL?
Cold Cathode Florescent Light. An older form of backlighting system.
What is an inverter?
Something which converts the AC of your CCFL to the DC of your laptop.
What is one way of verifying that your backlight has failed?
Shine a flashlight against the screen.
