Network Devices Flashcards
What is a router?
A device that forwards traffic between different IP subnets.
What layer of the OSI do routers operate on?
Layer three (the network layer)
What is a switch?
A common infastructure device that controls the flow of data. A switch determines where traffic should be forwarded based on the MAC address of a device.
What is an ASIC?
Application Specific Integrated Circuit which allows for very fast through put.
What is a multilayer switch?
It includes routing functionality.
What is an unmanaged device?
a switch bought for home that is considered plug and play and does not have any extra configuration options. Theres also very little integration and no management protocols.
What is an unmanaged switch?
a switch for a large company or eneterprise.
What is STP?
Spanning Tree Protocol. A way to prevent loops in multiple switches. Only available on managed switches.
What is port mirroring?
where you can take traffic from one port of the switch and copy all of that traffic to a different port on the switch. Ideally to plug in a port analyzer.
What is SNMP?
Simple Network Management Protocol. a way to collect and organize information about managed devices on IP networks.
What is an access point?
a device that provides a link between a wireless and wired connection. Also referred to as a bridge.
What is a patch panel?
a hardware device that contains ports for connecting and routing cables.
What is a firewall?
a network security devices that monitors and filters traffic.
What layer of the OSI does a firewall reside on?
Layer 4 (the transport layer)
what is a SOHO device?
Small Office Home Office device
What is POE?
Power provided on an Ethernet Cable
What is the traditional POE?
IEEE 802.3af and provides 15 watts of power
What POE was created in 2009?
IEEE 802.3at and provides 25 watts of power
What is the modern standard of POE?
POE++ IEEE 802.3bt with a max current of 71.3W
What is a hub?
A device that was used before switches. Also referred to as a multi port repeater.
What is a cable modem?
a device that connects your computer to the internet over a coax cable.
What is broadband?
A highspeed internet connection that is always on and can transmit a large volume of data. Broadband can use different types of connections such as Wi Fi, DSL, fiber, satellite and 4g/5g
What is DOCSIS?
Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification the standard for sending data over cable networks.
What is ADSL?
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. uses telephone lines and allows for faster download speed than upload speed.
