What is a DNS server?
Domain Name Sever. A server which coverts names to IP addresses and vice versa.
What is a DHCP server?
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. This server provides automatic IP configuration. This service is available on most home routers.
What is a file server?
a server which stores files in a centralized location. The storage of things like documents, spreadsheets, videos, pictures etc
What is SMB?
Server Message Block. A communication protocol used by windows. You can copy, delete and rename files on the server from here.
What is the apple version of SMB?
AFP (Apple Filing Protocol)
What are some standardized protocols that allow you to send print jobs to a printer?
SMB (Server Message Block), IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) LPD (Line Printer Daemon)
What is SIEM?
Security Information and Event Manager. A form of syslog used in large organizations. it helps an organization detect, analyze and respond to security threats.
What is a web server?
web servers are responsible for responding to browser requests that you make from your computer.
What protocols do webservers use?
HTTP and HTTPS
What is an authentication server?
a server that centralizes all usernames and passwords for authentication purposes.
What types of services does an all in one security appliance provide?
URL Filter/Content Inspection, possibly able to identify malware, act as a spam filter, may have other networking features such as CSU/DSU, can act as a router, firewall capabilities, act as a VPN endpoint.
What is a load balancer?
a device or software that distributes network or application traffic across multiple servers.
What are some ways load balancers work?
They can offload TCP so that it has a constant connection between all of the servers connected to it. It can also provide SSL offloading. They can commonly cache information
In what ways can a load balancer be configured?
advanced configuration can be performed on the traffic going through the load balancer so that certain webpages or applications can have priority. You can also prioritize certain applications to certain servers. This is called application centric balancing.
What is a proxy server?
servers that provide additional security. it sits in the middle of a conversation and examines that nothing in responses are malicious.
