Network Types Flashcards
What is a LAN?
Local Area Network. A network that tends to be contained to a building or a building nearby. Because the devices are local, they normally have a very high bandwidth.
What networks usually provide the high bandwidths for LAN?
Ethernet or 802.11
What is a WAN?
Wide Area Network. very large networks that can span the globe. WANs generally connect LANs over a distance. Also generally much slower than LANs.
What are some different WAN technologies?
Point to point serial, MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) Terrestrial and Non Terrestrial.
What is a PAN?
A personal area network. This is your own private network. An example of PAN technologies is things like bluetooth, IR and NFC.
What is IR?
Infared technology. Some examples of IR technology is remote controls, optic fibres, thermal imaging etc.
What is MAN?
Metropolitan Area Technology. a computer network that connects computers in a metropolitan area. Larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN. Its common for there to be government ownership of MAN.
What is as SAN?
Storage Area Network. looks and feels like a local storage device. Provides block level access.
What is WLAN?
Wireless Local Area Network. This is an 802.11 connection. However they do not have a wide range. To expand connectivity you need access points.
What is point to point serial?
a type of communication link that refers to a direct connection between two distinct communication endpoints, allowing data to be transmitted between them without the need for any intermediate devices or nodes.
What is MPLS?
Multi Protocol Label Switching is a technology used in computer networking to optimize the flow of network traffic and improve the effeciency of data transmission.
What primarily utilizes MPLS?
WANs
