Networking Tools Flashcards
What are cable crimpers?
a tool used when running new cables. It “pinches” a connector onto a wire.
What are some of the different types of crimpers that can be used?
Coaxial, twisted pair and fibre.
What is a wifi analyser?
a tool or software application used to analyze and troubleshoot wireless networks, particularly WiFi networks.
What action does a wifi analyser perform?
It provides detailed information about the wireless signals in the vicinity, helping users understand the quality, strength and interference levels of wifi connections.
What is a tone generator?
Also referred to as a toner probe. it is a device or software tool used to produce audio tones or signals of specific frequencies.
How can you use a tone generator for wire tracing?
- connect the tone generator to one end of the wire.
- you then go to the other end of where this cable is, and use the inductive probe to identify exactly which cable contains that particular tone.
What is a punch down tool?
a small hand tool used to connect wires to a punch down block, patch panel or key stone. Efficient as it also trims the wire.
What is a cable tester?
A device or tool used to test the integrity , connectivity and performance of various types of cables such as ethernet cables, coaxial cables and more.
What do cable testers do?
The help identify wiring faults, continuity issues and other problems in cables.
What will cable testers NOT tell you about?
They are very simplistic, so they will not inform you on things such as cross talk or signal loss. For those you need a more advanced tool like TDR.
What is TDR?
Time Domain Reflectometer. an electronic device used to analyze and troubleshoot various types of transmission lines, cables and waveguides.
What is a loopback plug?
a device used in networking and hardware testing to create a closed loop for testing and diagnosing various components, interfaces and connections. Essentially a connector that loops the output signal back into the input, allowing devices to test their own functionality or test communication pathways.
What is a physical network tap?
a hardware device used to monitor and capture network traffic passing through a network link. It provides a non intrusive way to access and analyze network data without disrupting the flow of data or affecting network performance.
When are network taps used?
For Network analysis, security monitoring and troubleshooting.
What is a SPAN?
Switched Port Analyzer. a tapping function thats built into your switch, also called a port mirror.
