Visual System: Central Visual Pathways Flashcards
4 targets of RGCs
- LGN
- Superior Colliculus
- Pretectum
- Hypothalamus
Perforated Substance
Area where penetrating arteries enter the brain
LGN
Processes info from contralateral field of vision; found in the posterior lateral part of the thalamus
*Projects to Area 17 via geniculo-calcarine tract (optic radiations)
Geniculo-calcarine tract
Medial axons travel dorsally over lateral ventricle and synapse in the cuneus gyrus
LATERAL axons travel rostrally around inferior horn of lateral ventricle making Meyer’s Loop; synapse in the lingual gyrus
Extrastriate visual areas
Higher-order visual areas
*Ventral projections= What
Dorsal projections= Where
Superior Colliculus projections
Thalamus
Pulvinar
CN III, IV, VI
Reticular Formation
Cervical Spinal Cord
Suprachiasmatic Nucleus in the Hypothalamus
Receives input about ambient light; involved in regulating normal circadian rhythm
