Preschool Developmental Era (Ages 3-5)
Developmental: Make-believe play, interest in peers
Language- Better, may make up words
Cognitive- Sorting of familiar objects, may get confused by some concepts, aware make-believe play is not real
Motor- Can ride tricycle, throw balls w/ body, skipping
Emotional- Understands fake emotions, cause & effect
Toddlerhood Changes (Age 1-3): Five Categories
Developmental: Language, toilet training, can’t understand negative consequences
Language- Understand pragmatics, turn taking
(Language explosion= 18-24 months)
Cognitive- Early problem solving, search for hidden objects, make-believe play
Motor- Walk up stairs, Jumps
Emotional- Empathy appears,
School Age (Age 5-11)
Developmental: Ability to concentrate, logical thought
Language: Understand definitions, master syllable stress, sarcasm
Cognitive: Spatial reasoning, increased attention
Motor: Fluid motion, handwriting
Emotional: Self-concept appears, conform to gender roles
Influences on Childhood
Stereotyped expectations for attractiveness/achievement
*Especially hard for girls
Warm, supportive parents= good
