Visual Field Deficits Flashcards
Papilledema
Increased ICP causing the optic disc to swell due to decreased venous outflow from the eye
Size of optic disc
1.5mm
Optic disc swelling
Can be caused by hypertension or optic neuritis
*Common presenting sign in MS
Relative Afferent Pupillary Defect
“Marcus Gunn pupil”
-Sluggish response of eye upon light stimulation usually caused by optic neuritis
Shaken Baby Syndrome
Retinal hemorrhage
Papilledema
Retinal Detachment
Ecchymosis of sternum
*Long term consequences include blindness, epilepsy, axonal injury, even brainstem avulsion (not good if you want to live)
Superior Right Retinal Quadrant
Project to medial portion of ipsilateral LGN
=> projects via optic radiations to cuneus gyrus of ipsilateral occipital lobe
*Represents inferior left visual field
Lesion of temporal retinal fibers
Blindness in nasal visual field of ipsilateral eye; commonly caused by ICA aneurysm
Lesion of Meyer’s Loop
Contralateral upper homonymous quadrantanopsia
PCA Stroke
Contralateral homonymous hemianopsia w/ macular sparing
Lesion of optic chiasm
Bitemporal homonymous hemianopsia
Projection of lower right retinal field
Synapses in right, lateral LGN and then travels via Meyer’s Loop to the Lingual gyrus
*Represents the Upper Left Visual Field
Macular Projection of right 1/2
Projects to central portion of right LGN; then projects to posterior 1/3 of cuneus and lingual gyri
*Represents the left 1/2 of macular field
