Cerebral EEG Flashcards
Alpha frequencies
(8-13 Hz)
Assoc. w/ relaxed wakefulness
Beta frequency
13-30Hz
Smallest amplitude EEG; assoc w/ mental activity, REM sleep
Theta frequencies
4-8Hz
Prominent in young adults; observed during drowsy states
Delta Frequencies
.5-3.5Hz
Large amplitude; assoc. w/ non-REM sleep
Extracellular field potentials
Changes in extracellular potential due to current sinks and sources
Measured by EEG
EEG amplitude
Determined by the degree of synchronization of neuronal firing
-Very active but unsynchronized => high frequency, low amplitude
Can create dipoles of spatially separated positive and negative charge
Auditory Deflections
Early- Brain stem processing; small amplitude
Late- Cortical processing; large amplitude
Simple Partial Seizure
Patient remains conscious; experiences inexplicable emotions
Complex partial seizure
Patient loses some consciousness; experiences automatisms
Automatisms
Repeated twitches; especially of the eyes or mouth
Secondary generalization
Partial seizure that spreads to other areas
Absence Seizure
General seizure where pt. appears to be staring off into space and randomly twitching
Tonic Seizure
Generalized seizure causing stiffening of muscles; particularly in the extremities
Clonic Seizures
Generalized seizure w/ repetitive jerking movements of muscles
Atonic Seizures
Generalized seizures causing a loss of muscle tone; pt. usually falls down
