Visual Pathway Flashcards
Where is the first place that fibres from the optic nerve synapse?
Lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus.
What structure in the brainstem do some fibres from the optic nerve go to and why?
The superior olive (for output to nuclei of CN III, IV, VI and VII and the spinal cord).
Where is the primary visual cortex in relation to the calcarine sulcus?
Just above and just below.
Does the upper visual field go to the part of the cortex superior or inferior to the calcarine sulcus?
Inferior to
Where do fibres from the macula go to in the visual cortex?
Posterior pole
What lobe of the brain do the fibres from meyer’s loop go through?
The temporal lobe
In what part of the brain are the frontal eye fields (motor)?
In motor part of frontal lobe.
What type of eye movements does the visual cortex do?
Movement in response to visual stimuli (smooth).
What type of eye movements do the frontal eye fields do?
Movements of command (saccadic).
Describe the path of nerve stimulation in the pupillary light reflex.
CN II -> Pretectal area -> EW nucelus -> CNIII
Describe the path of nerve stimulation in the accomodation reflex.
CN II -> Pretectal area -> EW AND Oculomotor nucleus -> CNIII
What are association white matter fibres?
They connect cortical sites lying in the same hemisphere.
What are commissural white matter fibres?
They connect one hemisphere to another (usually areas with similar function).
What are projection white matter fibres?
They connect hemispheres to deeper structures.
