If patient is 60 or over OR immunocompromised

Amoxicillin IV
What is the treatment for confirmed listeria bacterial meningitis and for how long?
Amoxicillin 21 days
Stop dexamethasone
What is the treatment for confirmed haemophilus influenzae meningitis and for how long?
Ceftriaxone 10 days
Stop dexamethasone

Herpes simplex
What is the management of viral encephalitis?
Aciclovir IV for 14 days then repeat LP

Supportive management
No antibacterials, antivirals or steroids.
What are the most common causes of bacterial meningitis?
Pneumococcus Meningococcus Haemophilus influenzae Occ other gram negatives Listeria (if over 60 or immunosuppressed)
