Virus
Malware that can reproduce itself. It needs you to execute a program to unleash it. May or may not cause problems on your computer. Some are invisible, some are annoying.
Worm
Can jump from machine to machine on its own. May or may not cause problems on your computer. Some are invisible, some are annoying. Uses the network as a transport medium. Spreads quickly. Firewalls are effective at mitigating unless the worm already got past them.
Virus types
Program viruses, Boot sector viruses, Script viruses, Macro viruses,
Program viruses
Part of the application, unleashes when you execute the program.
Boot sector viruses
A rare virus, it exists in the boot sector of your storage device. When you start up your computer, the virus begins to run.
Script viruses
Operating system and browser based scripts
Macro viruses
Common in Microsoft Office. Usually running inside another application.
Fileless virus
Stealthy virus that is good at avoiding anti-virus. It operates in the memory but is never installed in a file or application. It is never written to the storage. Obtained by link on website or email. Can encrypt, exfiltrate data, delete files, change registry etc.
