Application Recovery 5.6 Flashcards
Order of Restoration
Some apps will have higher priority to get restored. This priority list should be pre-defined. The order is subject to change based on circumstances, such as time of year, season, quarterly apps, etc.
Backup Strategies
You have options on how you backup. Tape, disk, optical drive. Can be backed up via replication having multiple online backups. Also common to have snapshot backups using a copy from a specific date and time.
File Backups
The “Archive Attribute”. This bit means this file is ready for archiving. Anytime the file is modified, a new archive bit will be set. There are multiple backup strategies. Full backup will be what you use mostly. There is also incremental where all files changed since last backup are backed up, and differential where all files changed since last full backup are backed up.
Incremental Backup
A full backup is performed. The next day an incremental backup of any files changed since full backup day is copied. The next day any changes since the full backup and the previous day are backed up. The same goes for the following day. Then, if you need to restore, you will need the full backup, and the incremental backups from each day after the full backup.
Differential Backup
A full backup is performed. The next day a differential is copied. The following day, another differential, and then another differential. A full recover would be, the full backup, and the previous days differential.
Backup Types
Full = All data, high backup time, low restore time, one tape set, archive attribute is clear.
Incremental = New files and modified files since full backup, low backup time, high restore time, multiple tape sets, archive attribute is clear.
Differential = All data modified since full backup, moderate backup time, moderate restore time, no more than two tapes, archive attribute is not cleared.
