This will balance the company reputation with employee participation. Social media use can be a great thing. These policies are an extension of the cod of conduct. You need to define requirements and expectation. This lets the employee know they need to be personably responsible for their conduct on social media as it can have an impact on the perception of the company. This also lets employees know they must maintain confidential information. Public companies are legally bound to this.

Business emails generally are business only email. Some companies are ok with personal email use. One of the goals is to avoid disruptive or offensive use. Some orgs are legally required to prohibit personal email. Lines become hazy when using browser-based email such as Gmail.
