What kind of data is ransomware targeting
A
Personal data - Pictures, videos, important documents.
Organizational data - Planning docs, employee personally identifiable information (PII), Financial information, company private data

What does ransomware do?
A
It will encrypt your data and the data can only be unlocked if you pay the attacker.

Crypto-malware
A
Uses cryptography to encrypt everything - Send them money, and they will send you the key. The payment will be through an untraceable payment system.

How do you protect yourself?
A
Always have a good backup that is offline. They will otherwise find your backup and encrypt it. Keep your system and anti-virus/anti-malware up to date.
