States of Data 6.1 Flashcards
Data in-Transit (Data in-Motion)
Any data we are sending across the network. By itself, it is not very protected. It goes through many points, routers, switches, devices, etc. In order to provide some protection, we often use firewalls or IPS’s. Or we can encrypt it with TLS or IPSec (internet protocol security).
Data at-Rest
The data on a storage device, hard drive, SSD, flash drive, etc. To protect it, its common to encrypt some of the data, or the whole drive. It’s also common to increase the security of it by applying permissions to it.
Data in-Use
The data is in the memory; system RAM, CPU registers, cache. This data is “in the clear”. This data is in use. This is a perfect place for bad guys to sift through the data.
