Viruses Flashcards
Virus Structure
DNA/RNA surrounded by protein coat, aren’t cells and have no membrane.
The virus’ protein coat is
composed of protein subunits which have a patterned effect
virus envelopes
only some have them, lipid bilayer, and contain viral spike
Virus protein spike
instructions are in nucleic acid
virus protein spikes help by
attaching to host cells
Viruses multiply by
using host cell enzymes and DNA to help produce viral components
Lysis is
to split
4 types of viral infection
Acute lytic
sub-clinical
latent
chronic
Acute Viral infection
develops rapidly and is over relatively quick
Sub-clinical Viral infection
usually doesn’t show any signs/symptoms may just feel ‘under the weather’
Latent Viral infection
A virus hides in a nerve cell and recurs when stress occurs or the immune system is low
Chronic Viral infection
The virus develops slowly and at a constant rate and stays in the host e.g Hep B or HIV
