weighs 4.5-5 kg 0.5 (eyelids) - 4mm (heels) thick

muscle tissue
nervous tissue
Functions of the skin
Protect from water & UV light, chemicals etc
Sensory to detect touch, pressure, vibration etc
Excretion of water, salt CO2, ammonia & urea
Synthesis of Vitamin D
Stores blood
Assist in temp regulation
Structure of skin ( 3 layers )
1 - epidermis
2 - Dermis
3 - the subcutaneous (hypodermis)
The Epidermis consists of and helps with
Keratinised stratified squamous epithelial tissue helps protect the skin & underlying tissue from heat, microbes, chemicals and uv light
The Dermis consists of
Sensory neurons, the arrestor pills muscle, sebaceous glands (oily secretion), dermal arterioles (temp regulation), Hair follicles
Melanin
reddish yellow to brown black colour pigment
Carotene
a yellow orange pigment in carrots pumpkin
Haemoglobin
protein that gives red blood cell their colour when fully oxygenated
