Virology Intro Flashcards
Capsid
Empty shell like structure composed of protein subunits (capsomers)
Nucleocapsid
Viral nucleic acid enclosed inside the capsid
Capsomer
Group of proteins that come together to form one protein unit. A collection forms helical, icosohedral/polyhedral, complex
Envelope
A lipid rich outer membrane layer, covering nucleocapsid
Only found on some viruses
Usually obtained from host cell membrane
May help to — avoid host immune response, protection
Peplomers/Spikes
Protrude from surface of the virus envelope
Role — attach to host cell, viral entry and exit, infectivity, cell specificity
Nucleic acid
Can have DNA or RNA
Unique purine and/or pyrimidine bases
Can be linear, circular, or in separate segments
Prodromal phase
Early nonspecific symptoms before more specific disease symptoms
Chronic infection
Continuation of primary infection
Most commonly fatal
Persistent recovery of virus with immunopathology
Latent infection
Dormant virus
Virus within the host not producing immunopathology
May or may not be producing active virus, showing no symptoms of infection
Prion
Proteinaceous infectious particle or Transmissible spongiform encephalitis
