Enterotoxigenic E coli (ETEC)
produces enterotoxin - Travelers diarrhea
Enteroinvasive E coli (EIEC)
invade cells of the colon
Enteroaggregative E coli (EAEC)
aggregative adherence to epithelial cells - diarrhea in children in developing and developed countries
Enteropathogenic E coli (EPEC)
localized adherence to epithelial cells - important cause of diarrhea in developing countries
Shigella dysenteriae
serogroup A
Shigella flexneri
serogroup B
Shigella boydii
serogroup C
Shigella sonnei
serogroup D
ESKAPE
Enterococcus faccium Staph aureus Kleb pneumo Acinetobacter baumanii Pseudomonas aeruginosa Enterobacter cloacae
ESKAPE function
nosocomial pathogens that are often multi drug resistance and have increased virulence
Yersinia pestis
causative agent of plague
fried egg colony
agent of bioterrorism
Bubonic plague
most common in US
swelling of lymph nodes close to portal of entry with hematogenous spread of bacteria to other organs and tissues causing intravascular coagulation and endotoxic shock if left untreated (75%)
Pneumonic plague
usually secondary but may also result from direct exposure to respiratory secretions from another pneumonic patient or infected cats
fever, cough followed by intravascular coagulation and endotoxic shock if left untreated (90%)
Septicemic plague
direct infection of the bloodstream by flea bite or spread from lymph nodes
high fever, seizures followed by intravascular coagulation, endotoxic shock and death
black hemorrhagic splotches develop - Black Death
Yersinia enterolitica
