Reasons why violence occurs in sport?

A

The desire to win- win at all costs mentality
Pressures from the media - can increase tensions by reinforcing rivalries
Frustration as a result of losing
Sponsorship deals increase importance of winning
Pressures/ taunting from spectators
The nature of the game eg: rugby= physical contact
Hooliganism= pre planned/ organised and

Over arousal during the game
Frustration/ annoyed by poor officials decisions
A result of the influence of drugs/ alcohol
As physical retaliation/ as a reaction to a challenge or tackle.

Implications of Violence on SOCIETY?

A

Hooliganism during international matches can have a detrimental impact on the PERCIVED LEVELS OF SAFETY within the nation= tourists less likely to visit
Levels of national pride can reduce
HIGH COSTS associated with increasing presence of security within stadiums and local areas
FANS more inclined to violence in certain situations eg: 2010 football world cup there was a surge in domestic violence

Implications of violence for the PERFORMER?

A

Acts of aggression can result in ACUTE or CAREER ENDING injuries
If the player was the instigator they will likely face a form of punishment eg: sent off/ lengthy ban.
=DECREASE chances of improving their performance
No longer seen as a POSITIVE ROLE MODEL
Players may feel threatened by the event (hooliganism) and leave the club
Players may become more aggressive in nature as they are constantly surrounded by it

Implications of violence for the SPORT?

A

REPUTATION- a sport may become known for violence and may affect young people taking it up= influences grassroots participation= less talent progressing to a higher level= overall standard could decrease

LESS SPECTATORS= less attending live matches due to public not wanting to condone violence and fears

GLOBAL BRAND DAMAGE= regular violence becomes associated with sport, affecting sponsorship and investment opportunities .

  1. Education/ Training= trained to deal with stress and emotional control through management techniques
    Must be made aware of how behaviours can be copied by younger people/ responsibility as a role model.
  2. Fair Play Campaigns= fair play philosophy should be promoted, governing bodies have introduced fair play programmes and nominate teams every year.
  3. Stricter punishments by referees and sport= Rugby union has a citing commissioner to examine evidence of foul play
  4. Improved refereeing to diffuse a situation before it arises= officials training and technology use
  5. Law enforcements and CCTV= Football Disorder Act allows police to arrest people identified as troublemakers
  6. Responsible media reporting= have a responsibility to present negative acts of violence in a bad way and sportsmanship in a good way
