Q

Main points about Self Esteem?

A
  • develop from an early age- sports experiences can positively or negatively affect a child’s self esteem
  • success and failure play a part but also how failure is managed (links to attribution theory)
  • high self esteem can decrease anxiety

Q

Define STATE SPORT CONFIDENCE?

A
  • the amount of confidence/ self esteem a performer has in a SPECIFIC SITUTAION
  • eg: confident in a gymnastics competition but not when taking a free kick within football/ penalty kick

=also known as SELF EFFICACY (bandura)
=changeable, but depends on the situation

Q

Define TRAIT SPORT CONFIDENCE?

A

The innate response/ self- belief a performer has, regardless of the sporting situation (GENERAL in any sporting situation)

  • a part of our innate/ stable personality
  • a person with high trait sport confidence will have little doubt that they will be successful in sport- beliefs in their own judgement

=CONSTANT
=can determine the activity we choose
=if a performer has a high trait sport confidence is is very likely that they also have a high state sport confidence

Q

Describe the factors that make up Vealey’s Model of Sport confidence and Draw it out?

A

The Sport Situation- the situation you are in at the time eg: taking a penalty

===Trait Sport Confidence (the level of confidence you have generally that you are going to get the ball into the goal)
===Competitive Orientation (the motivational drive and desire inside that you have to win the game and score)

State Sport Confidence- these lead into the performers state sport confidence which is DEPENDANT ON THE SITUATION (self- efficacy)

Performance in the Sporting Situation (behavioural response)

Result of performance (perceived level of success/ attribution/ level of SATISFACTION) based on PERSONAL OPINION

Q

Describe the four factors that are in Bandura’s Self- Efficacy theory and Draw it out?

A

Performance Accomplishments- past experiences such as winning or loosing

Emotional and Physiological Status- emotional arousal

Vicarious Experience- watching and copying others

Verbal Persuasion/ social Persuasion- coaching and evaluative feedback

==SELF EFFICACY JUDGEMENTS (can be high/ low- how well have you done/ situational response)

=BEHAVIOUR/ PERFORMANCE= actions then taken

Q

Describe and Explain the 4 factors of Bandura’s Self-efficacy theory?

A

Performance Accomplishments- strongest influence on self-efficacy/ confidence
Successful performers will generally have a high self-efficacy particularly if they attribute success to controllable/ internal factors

Emotional State/ Arousal- if the performer feels an increase in HR/ an increase in sweating= help them to become less/ over aroused
if they know it’s a positive response of the body

Vicarious Experiences-observations of others being successful, can help a lot if they are the same age

Verbal Persuasion- encouragement can raise confidence
Most effective if it comes from a SIGNIFICANT OTHER

Q

How can you raise Self- efficacy through Performance Accomplishments?

A

Performance Accomplishments- give success by making the activity easier eg: widen goals

Remind them of past success
Use small, achievable goals

16
Q

How can you raise Self- efficacy through Vicarious Experiences?

A
  • demonstrate using a performer of a similar ability

- live modelling is better than on a video/ pre-recorded

17
Q

How can you raise Self- efficacy through Emotional Status/ Physiological?

A
  • point out that being worried is a natural, POSITIVE response that makes the body ready for exercise
  • use relaxation techniques and positive thinking
18
Q

How to generally raise Self-Efficacy?

A
  • encourage attribution
  • place previous failure/ feelings of learned helplessness towards unstable, uncontrollable factors (tsk difficulty and luck)
  • show performers who also lack confidence
  • show highly skilled performers who have times of low confidence
  • show consequences of a poor lifestyle (BAHL)
  • give lots of encouragement and POSITIVE FEEDBACK
19
Q

Using Bandura’s model, how might a performer have low self-efficacy?

A

Performance Accomplishments-
Previous failure/ poor past performances
Previous failure attributed to uncontrollable, stable reasons (task difficulty and ability)

Vicarious Experiences-
Seeing someone of the same age/ peer group fail
Seeing others succeeding that are older and MORE ADVANCED

Verbal Persuasion-
Not received any encouragement/ positive feedback
SIGNIFICANT OTHERS don’t tell them that they are good
Friends tease them/ peer pressure

Emotional Arousal:
No effective strategies to control arousal levels (catastrophe theory)
Perceives psychological changes as worrying rather than preparation for action
