Define stress?
Feeling under pressure in a situation/ a state of emotional strain
What is stress usually related with?
ANXIETY= usually due to the belief that capabilities do not match performance needed from them
Define Eustress?
The use of stress in a positive way to enhance performance
They THRIVE under stress
3 stages of physical response to stress?
Hypothalamus stimulates the body to release hormones (adrenaline) = the flight or fight response
Adrenaline release leads to an increase in HR, blood pressure, and an increase in 02 for energy production
Can increase anxiety having an adverse effect on performance= poor decision making
Define Hypothalamus
An area of the brain which controls the release of hormones :)
What can increased adrenaline and stress cause?
Long Term Stress
Which can cause physiological diseases such as heart disease and strokes
What is the most widely accepted response to stress?
Selye- 1956
What are the three stages to Selyes idea?
- Alarm Reaction= physical reaction/ changes such as increased HR and increased adrenaline
- Resistance= start to cope and create a response, adrenaline levels fall
- Exhaustion= start to fail to cope= heart disease and long term stress
Define Stressors?
The environmental changes that can induce a stress response
Define the stress experience?
The way that we perceive the situation
Name some examples of the MAIN stressors of sport?
- COMPERTITION= puts performers into an evaulative position and this can cause apprehension
- CONFLICT= with other players or the opposition- could also be social stressors about decisions
- FRUSTRATION= could build up if prevented from reaching a goal
- CLIMATE= too hot or too cold
- INJURY= physically hurt or fatigued
- AUDIENCE= performing in front of others
