Define Gambling?
Gambling isn’t illegal but bribery and match fixing is.
Many find it exiting and easy to bet, especially when it takes place online eg: 2014 Fifia world cup= 1 billion legally bet.

Guardian example/ article: “Half of the Premier league clubs are to have sponsers for 2019-2020 season”
Wayne Rooney- Derby County Football cup= 32 red sponser on his shirt
Ronnie O Sullivan example?
Professional Snooker Player- turned down a £20,000 offer to fix a match
Athlete examples of match fixing- CROJNE, EGAN
Hansie Crojne= south african Cricket player, ambassidor for south african cricket
2015-Daron Egan- ex-jockey banned for 12 years, CAS= charged for match fixing
Define match fixing?
When a compertition is played to a pre-determined result
-usually involves bribing corrupt, lower status players
Define Illegal Betting?
When a player is involved in betting in sport which is corrupt accoriding to NGB rules eg: a boxer betting on themselves to loose.

+Big sponsership deals in sport for for betting companies
+Adds exitement to the game

- Can cause corruption and match fixing
- Can cause addiction, debt and addiction IN SOCIETY
- Increased online options= easier than ever to get involved
Match Fixing Definition?
THE PURPOSEFUL ACT OF AN ATHLETE TO INFLUENCE A MATCH
Can be an overall result of the match or a specific point
ILLEGAL
Alot takes place in Asia and are now moving their operators to the rest of the world
Requires contact to be made between “fixers” and coaches/ athletes
Can enable bets on specific parts of the game eg: mcr united will give away a penalty= large sums of money
Match fixing targets?
Generally performers who earn less are seen as targets eg: Omar Faye
A GLOBAL issue with international fixers working across the world
Match fixing doesen’t happen often in the uk but it’s unethical and deviance takes place through it
WHY does match fixing take place?
Lower paid athletes may be tempted by money as a large amount of their lower prize money is spent on travel and accomodation.
HOW can it be reduced?
- Rules such as athletes not being able to bet on the sport they are associated with
- Athletes not allowed to bet on their team winning, not loosing
- Large BANS , FINES and imprisonment could be imposed
Illegal Betting in Sports?
Occurs in countries that don’t allow betting to take place eg: India, so they bet offshore
Results in the formation of illegal betting syndicates which are a number of people working together
Syndicates can offer better odds
Syndicates can put pressure on target players to fix matches and has the potential to ruin the integrity of the sport within society.
EXAM QUESTION: Give reasons as to why it’s very hard to eliminate the use of performance enhancing drugs?

Deviance= behaviour outside the norms of the sport
-Positive deviance eg: playing whilst injured
-Negative deviance eg: match fixing, PED’s
“not all deviance is unlawful”
-Unlawful = punching an opponent
-Lawful= gamesmanship, time wasting and sledging in cricket
