A

Gambling isn’t illegal but bribery and match fixing is.
Many find it exiting and easy to bet, especially when it takes place online eg: 2014 Fifia world cup= 1 billion legally bet.

A

-usually involves bribing corrupt, lower status players

Match Fixing Definition?

A

THE PURPOSEFUL ACT OF AN ATHLETE TO INFLUENCE A MATCH
Can be an overall result of the match or a specific point
ILLEGAL
Alot takes place in Asia and are now moving their operators to the rest of the world
Requires contact to be made between “fixers” and coaches/ athletes
Can enable bets on specific parts of the game eg: mcr united will give away a penalty= large sums of money

Generally performers who earn less are seen as targets eg: Omar Faye
A GLOBAL issue with international fixers working across the world
Match fixing doesen’t happen often in the uk but it’s unethical and deviance takes place through it

A

Lower paid athletes may be tempted by money as a large amount of their lower prize money is spent on travel and accomodation.

  • Athletes not allowed to bet on their team winning, not loosing
  • Large BANS , FINES and imprisonment could be imposed

A

Occurs in countries that don’t allow betting to take place eg: India, so they bet offshore
Results in the formation of illegal betting syndicates which are a number of people working together
Syndicates can offer better odds
Syndicates can put pressure on target players to fix matches and has the potential to ruin the integrity of the sport within society.

-Positive deviance eg: playing whilst injured
-Negative deviance eg: match fixing, PED’s
“not all deviance is unlawful”

-Lawful= gamesmanship, time wasting and sledging in cricket
