Cameron Bancroft
List ways in which deviance can be seen through sport?
- Violence
- Hooliganism
- Gambling
- Match fixing
- Doping
Blood doping?
Description- two pints of blood is removed from athlete several weeks prior to competition
- The body replaces lost blood
- 1-2 days before competition reinjected
Positive- increased haemoglobin, increased oxygen to muscles= improved stamina
Negatives- hyper viscosity, increased blood pressure, blood clots, heart attacks, strokes.
Beta blockers?
Description- “sit” on receptors and block/ stop receptors from being stimulated.
Positive- slows heart rate, calms , steadies hand
Negative- can reduce it so low may stop, tiredness, low blood pressure
Anabolic steroids?
Description- synthetic testosterone used to increase muscle growth
Positive - repair body tissues after working, promote muscle growth, ability to train harder with less fatigue
Negative- females develop male features- liver and heart damage.
Narcotic Analgesic?
Description- Masks Pain- ow my bottom
Positive- reduces pain and injuries
Negatives- nausea, highly addictive, serious injuries can be made worse.
Diuretics?
Description- promote the removal of fluids from the body
Positive- rapid weight loss
Negative- Dehydration, dizziness and light headedness
Stimulants?
Stimulating Margot Robbie takes many amphetamines
Description- stimulates the body mentally and physically eg: amphetamines, cocaine
Positive- reduced tiredness, increased alertness, concentration, power, strength and endurance.
Negative- raise blood pressure, ADDICTIVE
Peptide Hormones?
Description- naturally occurring hormone- EPO AND HGH
Positive- increased oxygen transport and endurance
Negative- Possible blood clots and cardiovascular problems.
Why are legal supplements allowed within sport?
They don’t significantly enhance performance or affect health to a great extent negatively.
Caffeine?
Protein shakes?
Creatine?
Bicarbonate?
Carbohydrate Gels?
Aims to improve mental stimulation, concentration levels, enhance muscular contractions.
Aim to aid recovery time and improve muscle protein synthesis= muscle hypertrophy
Increase the energy stores in the body needed to complete powerful, muscle building exercises.
Buffers against blood lactate= longer until fatigue.
Used to provide the body with glucose (source of energy) , which is broken down to create energy.
Evaluate the use of legal supplements?
+provides a boost to health and wellbeing
+ can help recovery process and building muscle
+ available in a range of formats= easier to administer
+generally seen within the limits of fair play
+helps to maximise training and performance
- research is yet to confirm if there’s any long term effects
- some believe it is not within the spirit of fair play in sport
- doesn’t SIGNIFICANTLY enhance performance
- some supplements are not what they seem to be/ in large quantities can largely effect play.
Why do elite performers take PEDS ?
Pam
Rails
Me
- Pressure to succeed from family, friends, coaches and the media
- –Political Pressure can also be a common motivator especially during home games and events. Politicians enjoy a nations success= “win at all costs attitude” - Rewards- higher profile, increased appearance fees, sponsorship deals- (PRIZE MONEY AND FAME)
- Match other competitors- over the last decade the tour de France has had widespread drug problems.
- Positive psychological affects that allow them to train harder, increase endurance etc.
Implications of taking drugs on society?
Sport is a reflection of a corrupt society where there is a “win at all costs” mentality.
CREATES NEGATIVE ROLE MODELS
Enables more effective drug testing processes
Undermines value of a healthy lifestyle within society
