What are the s/s of vertebral fractures?
- Severe neck or back pain
- Paraspinous muscle spasm
- Bony tenderness
- +/- neurologic defects- weakness, N/T
What are the PE of vertebral fractures?
Swelling Ecchymosis TTP- bony and muscular Gap/step-off between vertebra Motor and sensory function Perianal sensation Sphincter tone
What imaging is used cervical vertebral fractures?
Plain xray
- AP
- Lateral odontoid view
What is a jefferson fracture?
Burst of C1
What is a hangman’s fracture?
Hyperextension injury
Bilateral fracture of C2 pedicles
What is a clay-shovelers fracture?
Spinous process avulsion

What is the treatment of cervical vertebral fractures?
IMMOBILIZATION
Methylprednisolone 30 mg/kg bolus followed by drip 5.4mg/kg/h x 23 hrs

Preventing neurologic injury
Restoring Stability
Restoring normal function
