Aseptic arthritis- synovitis
Develops after systemic infection
What causes reactive arthritis?
GI
- Salmonella typhimurium
- Ersinia enterocolitica
- Shigella flexneri
GU
- Chlamydia trachomatis
What is the onset of reactive arthritis?
1-3 weeks after infection
What is the epidemiology of reactive arthritis?
2-7% general population after infection
20% if HLA-B27 positive
M:F 10:1
What is reiter’s syndrome?
Urethritis/cervicitis
Arthritis
Conjunctivitis
What are the s/s of reactive arthritis?
- Reiter’s Syndrome
- Malaise
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Enthesitis- Achille’s tendon
- Dactylitis- “sausage fingers”
What is observed in PE of reactive arthritis?
MSK Skin Eyes GU tract GI tract
What is observed with MSK in PE of reactive arthritis?
Dactylitis
Asymmetric arthritis
What is observed with skin in PE of reactive arthritis?
Mucocutaneous lesions
Oral lesions
What is observed with eyes in PE of reactive arthritis?
Conjunctivitis

Cervicitis
