What are the s/s of ankylosing spondylitis?
Persistent LBP >3 months- in SI joint Early morning stiffness Relieved by exercise Pain that wakes pt from sleep Fatigue Asymmetrical oligoarthritis Achilles tendinitis &/or heel pain Extra-articular features
What is observed in PE in ankylosing spondylitis?
TTP Spinal decreased ROM Stooped posture (advanced) Schober test - Measures mobility of the lumbar spine Chest expansion - Thoracic spine Peripheral joints
What are the labs used in ankylosing spondylitis?
RF - Will be negative ANA - Will be negative Sed rate - Could be elevated CRP - Could be elevated HLA-B27
What is imaging used in ankylosing spondylitis?
Plain films
- Lumbar spine and SI joint
- “Bamboo spine”
MRI
- Will show inflammatory changes before bony changes occur on plain films
