vertebra details Flashcards
what is the pars interacticularis? what are fractures called in this region?
the portion of the vertebral lamina that is between the superior and inferior articular. fractures in this region are called spondylolysis
how are cervical vertebrae distinguished?
all have a hole in the transverse process though which the vertebral artery passes . C1 and C2 are unique.
foramen transversarium
hole through which vertebral artery passes
what distinguished thoracic vertebrae?
they have specialized articulation regions for ribs
what distinguishes lumbar vertebrae
they are large with heavy bodies. they also have mammillary processes which are located between the spine and the transverse processesl
features of the C1 vertebra?
has no spine, has anterior and posterior arches, large superior articular facets for articulation with the occipital condyles of the skull
features of C2?
has the dens (odontoid or toothlike process) which articulates with the homologue of the “body” of the atlas, forming atlanto-axial joint.
what makes the sacrum? surface?
five sacral vertebrae are fused forming this bone. It is ridged on the posterior side but smooth anterior surface.
what is sacral hiatus?
lower opening into the sacral canal.
what are the sacral foramina?
openings for sacral spinal nerves
coccyx
the coccygeal vertebrae (four) are fused forming this tail like process
