spinal cord Flashcards
in adult, spinal cord occupies
upper 2/3 of vertebral column, from medulla oblongata of the brain stem to about the L1-2 interertebral disc level.
in six month fetus, spinal cord occupies
from medulla oblongata to S1 vertebral level. point is, takes less space after birth and development because it doesnt grow after birth
conus medullaris
a cone shaped structure where the spinal cord ends
cauda equina
a collection of dorsal and ventral roots under the conus medullaris
where does the dural sac that covers the spinal cord and cauda equina end?
at the S2 level of the vertebral column
what is the meninges? what are its three layers?
covering of the spinal cord
layers: dura mater, arachnoid mater, pia mater
dura mater
outermost, leathery-like layer of connective tissue that covers the spinal cord (and brain), the dorsal and ventral roots as they enter the intervertebral foramen, and the spinal ganglia.
arachnoid mater
intermediate layer of meninges. has 3d appearance in the living wisps of arachnoid trabeculae span the space between the outer surface of the arachnoid mater and the deeper lying pia mater.
what is the subarachnoid space filled with?
CSF
pia mater
very thin and intimately invests blood vessels, dorsal and ventral roots and the entire surface of spinal cord and brain.
