ligaments of the vertebral column Flashcards
supraspinous ligament
runs along vertebral spines as a cord. continues the length of the vertebral column and merges with nuchal ligament.
nuchal ligament
strong ligament in cervical curvature region. substitutes for bone in providing attachments in this region.
anterior longitudinal ligament
lies on the anterior side of the bodies of lumbar vertebrae. continues length of the vertebral column. has splinting action.
what happens when a fracture of vertebral column occurs?
patient is held in hyperextention - the pull of the anterior longitudinal ligament will help realign fragments of bone and minimize further injury to the spinal cord.
ligamentum flava
run from lamina to lamina, covering most of space between these vertebral regions. the ligamentum flava contain elastic fibers that give them a yellow color. stretch to accomodate vertebral movement apart. hyperextension is whip-lash.
posterior longitudinal ligament
runs along the posterior side of vertebral bodies, but is anterior to spinal cord.
interspinous ligament
between adjacent vertebral spines
inter-transverse ligaments
between adjacent transverse processes
